Icard Fire District Receives New I.S.O. Rating After Inspection
9-25-2008
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Jim Long announced on
September 15, 2008 that the Icard Fire District completed its routine inspection and
received a 5 rating, effective Monday, December 1, 2008. The inspection, conducted by
officials with the Department of Insurance Office of State Fire Marshal
( OSFM ) , is
required on a regular basis as part of the North Carolina Response Rating System
( NCRRS ) . Among other things, the routine inspections look for proper staffing levels,
sufficient equipment, proper maintenance of equipment, communications capabilities
and the availablity of a water source.
The 5 rating is an improvement over the previous rating of 5 / 9S. The ( NCRRS ) rating
system ranges from 1 ( Highest ) to 10 ( Not recognized as a certified department by the
state, with most rural departments falling into the 9S category. While lower ratings do
not necessarily indicate poor service, a higher rating does suggest that a department is
overall better equipped to respond to fires in its district. Higher ratings can also
significantly lower homeowners insurance rates in that fire district.
" I'd like to congratulate Chief Lingerfelt for his department's performance and for the
hard work of all the departments members, " said Commissioner Long. " The citizens in
the Icard Fire District should rest easy knowing they have a fine group of firefighters
protecting them and their property in case of an emergency. "
State law requires ( OSFM ) officials to inspect departments serving districts of 100,000
people or less, which makes up all but 6 departments of the state's fire districts.

Practice Burn with Long View Fire
11-1-2008
Early Saturday morning 7 members from Icard Township Fire / Rescue participated in a
live burn exercise with Long View Fire Department. The house that was used for training
was located on Old Shelby Road  where Seagle's Junk Yard once was located. The
house was built in the 1930's and offered firefighter's plenty of interior fire suppression
training. More than 30 interior attacks were performed before the structure was
deemed unsafe to enter. This house burn was also part of a Firefighter 1 & 2 Fire Control
Class that was held at Long View Fire Department. A picture slide show of the house
burn is located on the F.D. Photos Page.

Participating Fire Departments: Long View Fire Department, Icard Township Fire /
Rescue, Stewart Simmons Fire Department, Bethlehem Fire Department, St. Stephens
Fire Department.
